Shoshana

"As a rose among the thorns, so is my beloved among the daughters" (Shir Hashirim, 2:2). Beyond its exquisite beauty in and of itself, the rose contains various mystical allusions:  The gematria of "shoshana" (Hebrew for rose) is Esther, a hint to Queen Esther;  A rose has 13 petals, corresponding to Hashem's 13 Attributes of mercy;  The white rose symbolizes lovingkindness (chesed), the trait of Avraham Avinu;  The red rose symbolizes strict justice (gevurah), the traits of Yitzchak Avinu;  The combination of both results in compassion (tiferes), the trait of Yaakov Avinu, hence the expression, Shoshanas Yaakov.
